For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance … will surely arise from another corner … But what if you have come to where you are for such a time as this? (Esther 4:14)

Dear Folks,

Join us on Monday, February 3, at 4:00 pm in the parish hall as eight members of Redeemer share their recent experience at a workshop on “Being an ally to the immigrant community.” The workshop was presented by the Episcopal Refugee & Immigrant Center Alliance (ERICA) and CASA, which have been working independently and in partnership on behalf of the immigrant community in Maryland for decades.

Background
ERICA was founded as an outreach ministry of the Cathedral of the Incarnation on Charles Street. In 2001 parishioners who were refugees from the Liberian Civil War worked together with other members of the Cathedral’s congregation to welcome those fleeing injustice, poverty, and oppression in other countries. Since its inception, ERICA has worked with over 700 humanitarian newcomers from 72 countries.

CASA advocates for legislative change in the Maryland General Assembly. From their website, “CASA’s policy team works to ensure that immigrant voices are heard and amplified in Annapolis. From annual lobbying events with legislators, to tireless organizing efforts, CASA is committed to moving forward meaningful immigration reform.” CASA’s work includes helping to pass the Maryland Dream Act in 2012, winning access to driver’s licenses for all in 2013, raising the minimum wage in 2019, and ending state and local participation in ICE detention in Maryland in 2021.

Method
We will begin on Monday afternoon in a “fishbowl” format, with the workshop attendees first sharing their reflections as the rest of the congregation listens in, and then we’ll open up the conversation to everyone present. Representatives from ERICA, the Episcopal Refugee & Immigrant Center Alliance will offer further information and guidance. Cristina Paglinauan and I will be on hand to frame the conversation, ground the “care of the stranger” in our religious tradition and ethos, and invite further action. Monday’s gathering will end promptly at 5:30 pm.

Love,
David
