Exploring the Italian Art of Madrigal Diminution

The Peabody Renaissance Ensemble presents a program that traces the genre of secular polyphonic partsongs from the frottolae of Bartolomeo Tromboncino to the madrigals of Cipriano de Rore and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. These same part songs are paired with more virtuosic improvisatory pieces written by Giovanni da Bassano and Girolamo Dalla Casa, that were based on the part songs where one or two of the melodic lines are decorated with florid diminutions. Both instrumentalists and singers perform the diminutions accompanied by a variety of instrumental combinations.
